Nerd Alert: Pinot Noir is a well known grape but some details are not as well known to the general public. Like italian Franciacorta sparkling wine is made from Pinot Noir. That Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are color mutations of Pinot Noir. In 2007 a study was published titled “A High Quality Draft Consensus Sequence of the Genome of a Heterozygous Grapevine Variety” and the grape used to study the genetic sequence was Pinot Noir. Finally, since the release of the movie Sideways in 2004, production of Pinot Noir in California has increased by 170%.

Personal Note: I’ve always been a firm believer of the importance of terroir (soil) in a wine. That becomes extremely relevant with Pinot Noir due to the inclusion of the grape in so many countries rosters. It’s such a delicate, sometimes fragile grape, yet it’s full of charm, elegance and illustrious redolence. Then again, we shouldn’t expect anything less from a noble grape.
