Notes: Dry, refreshing and crisp wine. Fruity aroma.
Nerd Alert: Grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The leaves of the grape vine are five-lobed with bunches that are long but compact, and deep green grapes that ripen in mid-late October in the Northern Hemisphere. A first DNA analysis in the late 1990s secured Traminer as one parent of Grüner Veltliner, but was not able to identify the other parent among the candidates studied. The current name appeared in a document for the first time in 1855; before that time it was known as Weißgipfler.
Personal Note: I’ve always been keen to white wines from western europe and although not my first choice, Gruner is definitely on the top five. But that’s not to say I don’t enjoy it, as a matter of fact If I were to assign personalities to a wine (which I admit I do often), this one would be an elegant business person. That being said, I don’t see many inexpensive Gruners running around compared to other great white grapes that can go to the extremes. Maybe that has something to do with it. Expectations always met with this wine. And although this one isn’t available in PR, there are many other brands available.
