Nerd Alert: Ampelographers have noted that the leaves of the plants for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have near-identical shape and structure. Modern DNA fingerprinting research at University of California, Davis, now suggests that Chardonnay is the result of a cross between the Pinot noir and Gouais blanc (Heunisch) grape varieties. As of 2006, 34 clonal varieties of Chardonnay could be found in vineyards throughout France; most of these were developed at the University of Burgundy in Dijon.
Personal Note: When it comes to white wines, this is the definition of multifaceted. How this grape adapts to the soil it grows in and manifests as different profile wines is incredible. That’s not to mention the difference you get when it gets the malolactic fermentation. Even people that know nothing about wine know about this grape. At the same time I don’t think it gets the respect it deserves and sometimes seen as a cheap alcohol alternative. Obviously those people don’t know about Burgundy. I had many alternatives to choose from, a lot of them well known wines but in all honesty I had been very curious about trying this Oregon cellar’s wines and here we are. Not dissapointed. I also tried a red one, but it will be farther down the list.
