Nerd Alert: It is a point genetic mutation of Pinot noir. Pinot noir is genetically unstable and will occasionally experience a point mutation in which a vine bears all black fruit except for one cane which produces white fruit. Fine Pinot Blanc originated in Alsace, where it makes up a large amount of the white wine made. It is hardly surprising that the Willamette Valley, sometimes called the best spot for Pinot Noir in the U.S., is a center of Pinot Blanc plantings too. Pinot Blanc’s reputation as an Old World, workhorse grape is changing.

Personal Note: For the longest time I ignored this grape as I really foolishly and inocently equated it to Pinot Gris. The pandemic allowed me to give it a test drive when a friend of mine lead one of our virtual tastings and among the wines he presented, there was this gem. On the first try my first thought was that episode from The Odd Couple ‘My Strife In Court’ from 1973 where we learned why we must never assume. Continuing thoughts did go towards the wine. I guess I picked a good candidate to alert my senses about this grape. I must admit, upon research of it, I read one of the funniest comparisons of a grape. Chardonnays understudy? That’s pretty funny.
