Nerd Alert: Riesling is a well known grape with a long history and the earliest reference we know of it (“Rüssling”) is from 1402 in the city of Worms, Germany. In 2015, Riesling was the most grown variety in Germany with 23.0% and 23,596 hectares (58,310 acres), and in the French region of Alsace with 21.9% and 3,350 hectares (8,300 acres). Riesling is on record as being planted in the Alsace region by 1477. DNA fingerprinting by Ferdinand Regner indicated that one parent of Riesling is Gouais blanc.

Personal Note: As the first grape of the second group, I could have chosen from a long list of rieslings because in my household, as in my parents house, it is the house wine. I’ve done tastings of rieslings from around the world in the past to curious and interesting results. And one of the great things about it is that you can find from the dry, to semi sweet, to sweet, to diabetes sweet. It is such an elegant wine and aromatic that it is truly, together with gewürztraminer, members of my top five grapes group. Although, as I continue this exercise, I cannot guarantee there won’t be a runoff. I am going after the title belt of 500. Not even H.W. Crabb, founder of To Kalon tried that many (he grew around 400 varietals back in the 1880’s). This one in particular I picked because Spatlese rieslings are my favorite. I call them Goldilocks because…well, I think you get it.
