Nerd Alert: Most likely originated in the region of Aragon in northern Spain, according to ampelographical evidence. Grenache was one of the first varieties to be introduced to Australia in the 18th century and eventually became the country’s most widely planted red wine grape variety until it was surpassed by Shiraz in the mid 1960s. In the early 20th century, Grenache was one of the first Vitis vinifera grapes to be successfully vinified during the early development of the Washington wine industry with a 1966 Yakima Valley rosé earning mention in wine historian Leon Adams treatise The Wines of America.

Personal Note: Not much to say about this grape. For a while, early in my wine education, I focused almost solely in Spain and it’s grapes and I drank my share of garnachas but it was never my default wine. However I most say over the last year I’ve encountered a lot of people with a new found passion for it be that in blends or straight up single varietal. I can’t really explain the why but it is a formidable grape with a lot of potential depending the where and the who. Especially for those of us that enjoy our wines with a little bit more years on them. This wine in particular was a supermarket whim purchase a few years back, got lost in the bins and could have waited a few more just as well.
