Nerd Alert: The grape is created by natural crossing of Grasă and Fetească albă in the 1930’s. Feteasca means maiden in romanian. Regala means royal, so in a nutshell this grapes name translates to ‘princess’. It is well suited to a continental climate, as it can withstand extremes of temperature in summer and winter. It has become one of the most planted varietals in Romania. It requires ample rainfall and does not perform well in drought-prone areas, and it is susceptible to botrytis bunch rot.

Personal Note: This is one of my most interesting grapes of this second round. The name alone is cool, but it’s from freaking Transylvania. Now we know what Dracula can drink other than bloody Mary’s (drumroll. I’ll see myself out). Talk about lesser known grapes for this side of the woods. This wine isn’t found in Puerto Rico. That was an impulse buy from Total Wines and I’m so very happy I did. I’ve had it for a while, but decided it was time. I wasn’t expecting much out of sheer ignorance, but the nose was very floral and very enjoyable on palate. I was honestly impressed and for discoveries like this, I’m happy I’ve taken on this virtual trip.
