Nerd Alert: In 1998, a study conducted by Carole Meredith’s research group in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at University of California, Davis used DNA typing and extensive grape reference material from the viticultural research station in Montpellier, France to conclude that Syrah was the offspring of the grape varieties Dureza (father) and Mondeuse blanche (mother). Legends of Syrah’s origins come from one of its homonyms, Shiraz. Because Shiraz, capital of the Persian Empire (modern-day Iran), produced the well-known Shirazi wine. Another legend of the grape variety’s origin, based on the name Syrah, is that it was brought from Syracuse by the legions of Roman Emperor Probus sometime after AD 280. The wines that made Syrah famous were those from Hermitage, the hill above the town Tain-l’Hermitage in northern Rhône

Personal Note: And so I return to Oregon. Same winery as the Chardonnay (#18). A very interesting thing for me about this cellar is that it’s founders are an argentinian and a puertorrican. The name Valcan comes from combining their last names and the drawings in the labels are inspired by Taino drawings, which are the indigenous people from Puerto Rico. So that right there makes this wine interesting to me. Then comes the drinking experience which was quite good. This was a full body wine and one of the things that impressed me other than it’s profile and it’s finish was that after three days in the fridge it was still doing good. Now before you get to any conclusions, what was left the third day was but half a glass. I can’t say I’ve drank a lot of syrah from Oregon, I have from California so I ‘m not going to go into details about comparisons just yet. Maybe some other time.
