Nerd Alert: The name Furmint may have been taken from the word froment for the wheat-gold color of the wine it produces. While it is possible that the grape was brought to Hungary in the 13th century during the reign of King Béla IV, ampelographers believe that the grape is likely native to the region. DNA analysis confirmed that a parent-offspring relationship exist between Furmint and the Hunnic grape Gouais blanc. Ampelographers believe the grape to be one of the parents of both Harslevelu and Plantscher.

Personal Note: I would say I had never tried this grape before but I had tried sweet Tokaji wines before so it wouldn’t be an accurate statement. But as a dry single varietal, this was a first. I tried this wine in the same Halloween virtual tasting as zweigelt but it wasn’t really a part of the tasting. You see as we coordinated the event we chose a list of interesting wines from the distributor and we went with a blend that had 10% Harslevelu and it was a higher end wine. I could have just gone with that one for this list since it accomplishes my 90% rule but I wanted to go with the 100% estate furmint on account of…well it being there. So in the end I had the great opportunity of having them side by side. Same producer, same year, 10% grape difference, and what a difference that made. They drank so differently. I preferred the aroma of the estate furmint but the structure of the Zafir Dulo was unequivocally masterful. This was a great side by side experiment.
