Nerd Alert: The gamay grape is thought to have appeared first in the village of the Gamay, south of Beaune, in the 1360s. In July 1395, the Duke of Burgundy Philippe the Bold outlawed the cultivation of the grape, referring to it as the “disloyal Gaamez”. In 1929, Gamay was crossed with the table grape Seidentraube (also known as Luglienga bianca) to produce the white wine grape Regner.

Personal Note: I opened this wine the week of Beaujolais Nouveau. I would like to say I was doing it on purpose but it was sheer happenstance. I’ve had this wine before and its performance it’s pretty expected. Maybe because this producer works quality even on their entry level wines. Regardless I like Beaujolais because even their most grand wines I find them to be pretentiousness-free. I have noticed that slowly but surely, here in Puerto Rico there is starting to be an appreciation for Beaujolais and specifically for the celebration of Nouveau. Who says we don’t enjoy a good party?

Curious Synonyms: Beaujolais, Bourguignon Noir, Caracairone, Melon Noir.
