Nerd Alert: The origins of Godello variety are located in the town of Godella (Valencia) where this variety was first planted back in the 19th century by a local landowner in their plantation of Campo Olivar by the Baron of this township. In the early 1920s the vineyards were transported by a Galician trader who took several samples up to Galicia. Godello had a close brush with extinction in the 20th Century, with only a few hundred of its vines remaining by the 1970s. New DNA research has pointed towards these Godello and Verdejo being siblings.

Personal Note: The first time I tried this grape was about seven years back. There was an effort from the DO Ribeiro in Puerto Rico and they were bringing some winemakers, and presenting some wines trying to look for local distributors. I was just starting in wines but already playing reporter and got to meet some very interesting people. Before the group left, they gifted me a bottle of a Godello from Ribeiro. If I’m not mistaken it was a Ramon Do Casar. A little while later I opened the bottle with some friends and I was truly impressed by the expression of the wine. It had a fantastic acidity and did not taste like most white wines I had till that moment. Although, I haven’t done a side by side tasting of spanish single varietal white wines in a long time, mainly since I’ve started this idea. But I’m liking all the ideas that are coming out of this project.
