Nerd Alert: Created by Hermann Müller from the Swiss Canton of Thurgau in 1882. It is a crossing of Riesling with Madeleine Royale. There are around 42,000 hectares (104,000 acres) cultivated worldwide. When Dr. Müller created the grape in the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in the late 19th century, his intention was to combine the intensity and complexity of the Riesling grape with the ability to ripen earlier in the season that the Silvaner grape possesses.
Personal Note: Let me tell you a short story. It’s the 24th of November 2020. I’m in the supermarket, buying things to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner which I was cooking for the first time. So I’m walking around the store laser focused on only what I need but of course, being the wine nerd aficionado that I am, I decided to stop in the wine section. Now, at this point, I’ve already decided that I’m only buying wines for my list for the foreseeable future and I think I know every single varietal wine available in Puerto Rico and I’ve purchased all market-accessible wines yet I walk around the section. And I’m looking at labels, and looking at prices and I turn a corner and go through the inexpensive wine area and with the corner of my eye I saw a combination of letters that did not compute. So I stop, take three steps back, turn my head and there it read: Rivaner. My first instinct was to assume it was some wine name but, in the time of infinite data access, why guess, right? And just like that, I found my first bottle of Müller-Thurgau (it’s original name) in the least likely of places. on an island that keeps surprising me with the things I can find in it.
