Nerd Alert: For most of the 20th century, it was the world’s most widely planted premium red wine grape until it was surpassed by Merlot in the 1990s. However, by 2015, Cabernet Sauvignon had once again become the most widely planted wine grape, with a total of 341,000 hectares (3,410 km2) under vine worldwide. DNA profiling carried out in California in 1997 showed that despite its prominence in the industry, the grape is a relatively new variety, the product of a chance crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon blanc during the 17th century in southwestern France. Two words that describe why the dominance of this grape are: adaptable and inimitable.

Personal Note: I’ve been thinking a lot with what wine I should complete this milestone and I felt it had to be with a well known grape. Now I know that just like with Nebbiolo, I could have gone with plenty and I do mean plenty of alternatives for a Cabernet Sauvignon but I wanted to go with this one. From Alexander Valley in Sonoma County, this wine is a newcomer to the Puerto Rico market even though it’s been out there for a while and I felt connected with that mainly because I’ve been out there for a while in the wine atmosphere but just recently entered the Ig cosmos. Also, this wine is made by Ray Signorello, it has a consistent over 90 points by reviewers year after year, has aging potential and price/quality is just amazing. Finally, I chose this wine for this grape all the way back in September when I bought it and every time I opened the wine fridge its as if it was asking me “Is it time yet? Is it time yet?” So finally I said yes it is time. This is the second wine I review from Hedonist, a young distributor and friend that has a keen eye for wonderful wine finds. And with it I not only complete the first 50 but this complicated year. Cheers!
