Nerd Alert: Native to the Basque Country, Spain. The three Txacoli DO’s use different synonyms for the grape, those being Txakoli de Alava, Getariako Txakolina and Bizkaiko Txcakolina. Until the 1980s, txakoli was a home-made wine, drunk in the Basque Country, Cantabria and Valle de Mena, and almost in danger of dying out towards the middle of the 19th century. That changed after receiving DO certification in 1989. Most txakoli is grown in the Atlantic regions of the Basque Country, areas with high rainfall (between 1000 mm and 1600 mm of annual rainfall on average) and average temperatures between 7.5 °C (46F) and 18.7 °C (65F), occasionally suffering from frost.

Personal Notes: I’ve heard about Txacoli for such a long time and even though I was an avid Spanish wine drinker, I could have played the never have I ever game with this grape. As a matter of fact, until recently I thought Txacoli WAS the grape. But you live, you learn. And I must say I like it even more than Albariño and Verdejo. Overall I found it to be quite balanced. I should add this wine in particular is one of those fitting to the 90% rule. The other grape with the 10% is Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia. The main difference between them is the Zerratia has more compact clusters and carries some vegetable aromas. I wonder if I could find this Zerratia as a standalone wine. The picture today includes a singles box set from one of my favorites spanish bands, Los Planetas. Once upon a time I was a musician influenced greatly by them. Something about this wine reminded me of them. Spain makes great things.
