Curious Synonyms: No known synonyms.

Nerd Alert: It’s a hybrid grape variety for use in white wine production developed by grape breeder Bruce Reisch at the Cornell University New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1960s (until then known as NY62.0122.01) and released on July 7, 2006. It’s a cross between Muscat du Moulin (Couderc 603 x Pedro Ximénez) x Muscat Ottonel. It contains genes from Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera.. It is a highly aromatic, high quality muscat wine with improved winter hardiness and disease resistance over its vinifera parent. Currently it’s only grown in New York and Indiana. In 2012, Muscat varieties as a whole were up 33% and edged out Sauvignon Blanc as the third most popular white wine in the United States.

Personal Note: I must confess this was purely an impulse buy. I was looking for specific wines I need and then I see this wine from Finger Lakes, NY (a place that makes amazing Riesling by the way). It said Moscato in the front, which I already did for the list, but I felt compelled to pick it up. I had not heard from the distributor before and as I turned the label I read “Valvin” in front of Moscato and I got to searching. And as I searched, Indeed it was valid for the list. It’s a hybrid grape. It felt great man. An unplanned find. Like when you get an extra tender when you go to Popeye’s. I normally don’t drink a lot of Moscato but the frizzante style did help. I have been reading a lot about the upper New York wine region (part of the Eastern American Wine Area that I keep going on about) but I had not heard about this winery before. The current winery is from 2002, but it was previously established in 1986 working on hybrid grapes. However some of it’s vines date back to 1866, planted by a Dr. Byron Spence in Yates County.
