Nerd Alert: First official documentation of the grape is from 1862 when it was included in a viticultural exposition in Vienna, Austria. Ampelographers believe that the grape likely originated somewhere in a swath of land stretching from Dalmatia through Austria and Hungary. DNA profiling has shown that Blaufränkisch is a cross between Gouais blanc and Blaue Zimmettraube. In Hungary, where it is known as Kékfrankos, the variety occupies roughly 7,998ha (19,764 acres) in total – almost three times its Austrian coverage.
Personal Note: Another grape I’ve had before. Well, actually I’ve had this wine before. There’s not a lot of options for this grape in Puerto Rico and the only one I know of is carried by this distributor. Of course he also brings some other curiosities and in my last visit I got a few things for this list. Now again, probably it’s because of lack of exposure but I find it very difficult to differentiate between Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch and I don’t blame myself considering the second one is one of the parents of the first one. I’m sure if I keep drinking the grape I can expand on their differences. Not that I’m complaining. They are easy to drink, have good fruit and have a different profile from my everyday wines.
