Pronounced nose with black fruit. Neither dry nor sweet but I did crave a chocolate bar as I drank it.

Curious Synonyms: Weinsberg S 341
Nerd Alert: Created by August Herold at the grape breeding institute in Weinsberg in the Württemberg region in 1956 and released for cultivation in 1979. As a successful vinifera crossing, Dornfelder was used as a parent variety to create several new varieties including Acolon (a 1971 crossing with Blaufränkisch), Cabernet Dorio (a 1971 crossing with Cabernet Sauvignon), Cabernet Dorsa (another 1971 crossing with Cabernet Sauvignon) and Monarch (a 1988 crossing with Solaris). Bred to be a vigorous and high yielding grape variety. The grape has started to be growned in England and in the United States, Brazil, Canada and Japan.
Personal Notes: Anytime a family member living in the mainland comes to visit and alerts me to it, right after telling them how happy I am they are visiting, I go see where’s the nearest Total Wines to them so that they can bring me something I can’t get my hands on down here. Anyway this is one of those wines. I had actually forgotten about it. It was in the back of my bins and while reorganizing I found it a few weeks back. And a good thing too. My brother is visiting soon and I was going to order another. Now there’s room for a whole new grape.
This was the first time I tried this grape and expectations were high. I love german wines and german rieslings is our house wine (although I’m an equal opportunity riesling drinker). This was not a dry wine. I mean it wasn’t a dessert wine, but on palate it definitely made me crave for some chocolate bars…and I obliged. The nose was definitely pronounced with black fruit and I enjoyed that bad boy. It lasted in my fridge two days and its expression was intact. Now I don’t have a big track record of trying red german wines, but I do know that Rheinhessen competes head to head with Mosel for my first place german region. This wine makes a good case for it’s region. It’s all about teamwork.
