Nerd Alert: This varietal is tolerant to cold and it’s also cultivated in Eastern European countries. In 2004, it was the 22nd most planted vine variety in the world at 45,000 hectares. DNA fingerprinting has found Aligoté to be a crossing of Pinot noir and Gouais blanc, which is an ancestry which is consistent with an origin in Burgundy. The grape ripens early with moderate yields and produces wines high in acidity that can be drunk young.
Personal Note: I don’t really remember if I’ve tried this grape before so I’ll guess….no. I decided to have a family pool day since most in our group are vaccinated and the rest wear masks so we opened with this wine. Because that’s what we do at my parents house. We open up bourgogne wines for pool days. Any who, I had this expectation of a powerful aromatic wine but was greeted with something else. (Shows you how much I know about the grape). It was delicate, it was nuanced, almost timid but it had an elegant aroma. It had finesse which is something you’d expect from Burgundy. I started joking around that it had this almost regal characteristic. A rather bashful yet commenced wine eager to concatenate with a Sidney Bechet album. I don’t think it’s a wine for the “show me the fruit” crowds, however, if you showed me a red snapper with it…now, the story changes.
