This was yet another example of Italy doing it right. I know it sounds lately like I’m overselling Italian wines, but damn Italy, so many great varietals.

Nerd Alert: Used with several other grapes to create the light red regional blended wines Bardolino and Valpolicella. The Corvina vine ripens late and is prone to producing high yields which can harm wine quality. Historically in the Veneto region Corvina was often confused with Corvinone, a similar larger red grape that ripens later, but DNA profiling has shown that they are two distinct varieties. In 2005, DNA evidence showed that Corvina was a parent variety to the Venetian grape Rondinella.

Personal Note: This might seem inconsequential, but this was my first ever glass cork. Should have seen my face upon removing the capsule. Took me a few seconds to discard the impulse of using the corkscrew (insert laugh track). I’ve had this wine here stored for a few months now. Didn’t know where to fit it within the lists and today I just said, let’s do it. We know this grape from Valpolicella wines, being the principal grape in the blend, but I had never tried it on it’s own. Unfortunately I opened it before the AC was on and you can see the result on the label (it was really hot today) but it didn’t affect the wine. This was yet another example of Italy doing it right. I know it sounds lately like I’m overselling Italian wines, but damn Italy, so many great varietals. This wine on nose, palate and finish was about medium, purple in color, aromas of plums and hints of spices that I mistook for mint at first and musky earthy tones in there as well. It had good fruit on palate with tannins present but not overpowering. And even though I established it was mostly medium on most of the measuring elements, I feel the flavor intensity was pronounced. Very enjoyable, every glass and that’s what we look for in the end, amirite? Also, full disclosure, yes. I kept the glass cork, but I think we all knew from the very beginning I was going to be doing that.
