Nerd Alert: Widely regarded as the most successful of the many German grape crossings that emerged in the 20th Century. Named after its creator, grape breeder Dr. Georg Scheu, who made the initial crossing which was officially released to the public in the 1950’s. It is considered to be a crossing between Riesling and Bouquet Blanc.

Personal Note: When I first bought this wine (outside the island) the first thing that got my attention, other than it was a grape I had not tried before, was the Spatlese part. Being such an avid Riesling fan, particularly in that variant, my attention was taken. Of course this grape behaves nothing like a Riesling, even though it is one of it’s parents. I can see how someone might confuse it but there are hints and signs that point to it being something different. The grapefruit I’ve read so much about was definitely there, together with honeysuckle. I’m just wondering, if this was the profile of it as a spatlese…how would it behave normally?

Anyway, this wine had very little alcohol and even though I read many times it has less acidity than a Riesling, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any. It sure did. I took this wine to one of the most remote beaches in Puerto Rico on vacation, a difficult place to access by land and we started the day early with this grape. No. I’m not saying how early. The photo I took in the afternoon. It was a lovely place and a lovely wine. Now is it just me, or when you say the name of this wine the first thing you think of is cherubs? I need to try this grape now as a real sweet wine. I’ve been told there are magnificent specimens out there.
