Nerd Alert: It’s the most planted white grape variety in Greece. However, Roditis is not a white variety, since its berries’ skin color veers to the reddish. The variety is terroir-driven and a late ripener and suited to a Mediterranean climate. Permitted in a range of appellations, most notably in the wines of Patras where it is allowed as a varietal wine. It’s a very old, indigenous variety grown in 32 prefectures in Greece. Viniculture in the ancient land of Peloponnese goes back at least 4,000-5,000 years.

Personal Note: It’s curious to me how the lines keep getting blurrier for wine color provenance. This is yet another example of a grape that isn’t particularly white yet it’s known for making white wines. When I bought this wine, or should I say, the last time a friend that traveled to Las Vegas stopped against his will in a Total Wine to find wines for me that in other states were not available, I was not counting on this varietal later being available by two different distributors on the island. Goes to show you how distribution keeps growing and availability increasing. Score one for local wine fans.

This is my fifth greek wine for the list, and for someone that has barely just started trying wines from Greece, I’m truly enjoying the grape variety this country has to offer. This wine in particular was bone dry with medium acidity and plenty of saline notes and minerality, maybe even some citrus in the back. I made the mistake of drinking the wine by itself and it cried for a pairing with anything sea related. If I’m really sharing the process, I immediately thought of a lobster roll from New England. So there’s a lesson here somewhere. Always listen to your wine. They know what they need. Or was it listen to your palate? I don’t know, but you get the jist of it.

I shall later blog about TW’s issues online with varietal labeling. Stay tuned.
