Nerd Alert: Viticulture and wine production in Mallorca date back to at least 123 BC, when Mallorca came under Roman rule, and Pliny the Elder is known to have praised Mallorcan wines in the 1st Century AD. Prensal made wines are usually crisp, with balanced acidity, giving light and refreshing white wines. There were 145 ha (359 acres) of Prensal grown in Spain in 2015.

Personal Note: This wine was a surprise even for me. A local distributor dedicated exclusively to wines from Mallorca, Spain? Winning. The label of the wine states the grape being Prensal, yet for such a small place, it has quite a few synonyms and some of the information I found under Moll. There seems to be so much wine history in this small island yet quite hard to find. A Pliny the Elder shout-out? That’s impressive.

Once I opened the wine, it took me a solid twenty minutes to process what aromas I was getting. My brain was stumped. I started going through a mental list of logical white wine related fruits until I hit it. On the one hand there was a ripe banana aroma to it. I learned that when bananas ripen they release smelly chemicals known as esters, with the most present known as isoamyl acetate. Wine nerd aficionados like me also know this name because in wines its formed by yeasts during fermentation. It felt good making that association. Thanks WSET L2.

There was another aroma, a bit more green-oriented that I later equated to a faint basil scent. With these two elements, it’s no wonder it took me so long. I struggled with this aroma assessment on account of it being out of the norm for my daily wine intake. Then I remembered, I have no basis for comparison for this grape, so I let it go. The wine also had a creamy feel on mouth and its acidity was medium. I definitely enjoyed it. Anybody ever tried this grape?
