Nerd Alert: Friulano ripens early but buds late, and is productive to the point that yields must be monitored to maintain quality. Its thin skins make it susceptible to various forms of rot and mildew. The first definite mention of Tocai Friulano wine made from Sauvignon Vert/Friulano is only thought to date from 1932. In 1995 the European Court ruled that “Tokay” should be used only to describe the wines of Tokaj in eastern Hungary.

Personal Note: This past sunday, while everyone was running towards the beaches of the west side of the island, I went the other way. Ended up in a nice place in the less traveled southeast corner of the island. Not a lot of people, good seafood and then, we took our beach chairs and just chilled for a bit.

The beach at this particular location was interesting. The sand was darker and more compacted than most places in the island and when the sun would hit it directly, I could see sparkles as if it was dusted with gold. Being the curious nerd aficionado I am, I came across a book titled A Reconnaissance Study of the Beach Sands of Puerto Rico and from there I found that the area has three resistant areas of consolidated sand and gravels composed of carbonate material, quartz, feldspar, and rock fragments. No idea what most are but sounded cool.

Indirectly, I matched this wine quite well with the location because on palate there was a nice minerality to it up front. There were fruit components of citrus and other white fruit and it had a present acidity while the body was light. It was a hot day so the wine didn’t stay cold for long. But it was interesting trying the white wine at a higher temperature. I didn’t enjoy it as much on palate but the nose was more outspoken.

It was my first time trying a Friulano. On a separate note, this is my 10th white wine from Italy with plenty more in waiting list.
