Maybe it was the heat but I went through this wine fast. It was enjoyable for me and as a varietal it was very difficult to differentiate from other whites from Italy.

Nerd Alert: Comes from the pejorative form of the Italian word Vernaculo, meaning “common” or “indigenous”. They are light-skinned and produce light white-wine styles with crisp acidity and citrus fruit aromas. Ampelographers have determined that the this grape’s vine has many clonal varieties but is unrelated to some other vines within the country. The Vernaccia wine grape is mentioned as early as 1276 in San Gimignano’s records and in Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Personal Note: So a few wines ago I talked about the 3 V’s from Italy. This is the second one. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the only wine to receive DOCG in the region and has received accolades since the 60’s when the DOC was introduced. This was my first time with this grape and I used it as a companion as I played with my son in the park. Had my Yeti cup filled and enjoyed it in the warm afternoon as we swinged, looking at the trees and watched the birds.

Maybe it was the heat but I went through this wine fast. It was enjoyable for me and as a varietal it was very difficult to differentiate from other whites from Italy. Yes I got some citrus notes, an elusive nuttiness, acidity on point, it was definitely not a light wine although I have difficulty pinpointing it’s weight category. Maybe medium minus. On palate it was medium as well. Nothing that lingered for too long. But could I try this wine blind and ever think of it’s name as an alternative? Doubtful. But I guess that’s more New World wine drinker problems than anything else.

Like with other wines in the list, I liked the label very much. It’s enticing and eager to tell a story of a small italian town and I have no trouble admitting I’m a sucker for those stories. This was yet another Total Wine participant and for the price I don’t think I can complaint at all.
