#95 St. Laurent – 405 grapes left

I let it breath and was quite happy with the results. The red fruits where there, the oak disguised as vanilla was there and there was something savory.

Nerd Alert: Aromatic black grape variety planted throughout parts of central Europe. Tend to be dark purple in color, structured yet silky with a characteristic dark-cherry flavor and often matured in oak and show good aging ability. Saint-Laurent has long been thought to be related to Pinot Noir. Some DNA profiling suggests that it is even a direct offspring.

Personal Note: The first time I tried this grape was a few years back during a tasting this distirbutor did in a store where they focused in unusual grapes. It was quite a cool idea and I even drag some wine newbie friends of mine to join me. This was before I embarked in this grape trip. I don’t remember much about the grape from back then though.

I can’t say I know a lot about austrian wines. Yes I’ve tried a few Gruner’s, some Zweigelt but there are so many varietals grown there. Somo exclusively, others more well known but with different profiles. This grape in particular, I’ve tried now twice but from the same producer. Because it’s the only one that is available (and I’m grateful for that) but as soon as I have an opportunity, I will try the grape again. Just like with most of the varietals from this list. I’m even thinking of adding a section of “Repeats” because this road needs to revisit some grapes while I buy some time getting additional single varietal wines.

So a few days ago I opened the Sattler. I took my time, I let it breath and was quite happy with the results. The red fruits where there, the oak disguised as vanilla was there and there was something savory if even in the smallest form factor. Not sure what it was though. As per the body, it was medium and the finish was long. I know its so easy to say “its Pinot Noir-like” but I don’t know. I didn’t get that vibe.
