Nerd Alert: White grape from Andalucia, Spain. Main varietal in Sherry, occupying 95 percent of the total vineyard area in Jerez. Sherry’s idiosyncratic output derives as much from the winemaking style than the grape itself, which is why Palomino, with its neutral flavor profile, is a good fit. The name Palomino is said to be that of Fernán Ibáñez Palomino – a military officer of some importance during the Reconquista.
Personal Note: I went on sabatical three grapes from the 100. It wasn’t planned. And it definitely wasn’t lack of wines for the list. I still have quite a few on queue. Life just happens sometimes. We must roll with it. Take what we know, what we do, and do new things. Different things. Just like they did in Andalucia with grape wines. They did something different. Hence Jerez.
I’ll be honest, until I took my WSET Level 2 class, I had little if any understanding of Jerez. And I’m not an expert. Not by a long shot. I thought it was all sweet fortified wines, with overpowering aromas and for the most part I didn’t partake in them a lot. Then I learned about the different styles and substyles. Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado and my mind was blown. In this particular case, it was Palomino the star.
As per the wine l started looking at its color which was beautiful. Like going shopping for mahogany wood for the floors. The nose was on point Oloroso (aromatic in english). Fortified wines have this amazing overpowering nuttiness blended with caramel. But on palate…it was dry. Not overly dry but it definitely wasn’t a sweet wine. It was so perplexing. and enjoyable. One tends to think fortified and immediately think overly sweet. Well, in Jerez we have to be sure. So homework before buying is keen to getting what you want.
