Nerd Alert: A red Catalan wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Conca de Barberà and Costers del Segre Denominación de Origen (DO)s of Catalonia. Ampelographers believe that the grape is likely indigenous to Northeastern Iberian Peninsula. Today there are approximately 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of the variety.

Personal Note: I’m a big fan of spanish cavas and I’ve had my share of variety but never had I tried a 100% trepat cava. Nor, for that matter, was I aware that they were available in Puerto Rico. I brought this wine to celebrate christmas with my mother in law as she enjoys when I bring in unexpected new wines. I was very pleased with this Trepat and it’s profile which wasn’t far from what I’ve tasted in cavas before but it did had it’s unique nuances. They also have a relative short production with less than 16,000 bottles a year. You know every time I think I’ve tried a lot of different wines from Spain I have to remind myself that they have around 400 varieties planted throughout the country though 88 percent of the country’s wine production is from only 20 grapes. In this list I’ve already done 9. So onward we go.
