My first Dolcetto. Lots of earth notes. Some black fruit. Really dry.

Nerd Alert: Along with the French grape Chatus, Dolcetto is a parent variety to several Piedmontese grapes including Valentino Nero, Passus and San Martino. A document of 1633 records the presence of Dolcetto in the cellars of the Arboreo family of Valenza. In 1700, Barnabà Centurione sent the wine as a gift to Queen Anne of Great Britain. Often viewed as Piedmont’s third red-wine grape, Dolcetto is something of a poor cousin to Nebbiolo and Barbera.
Personal Note: Like I’m sure it happens to a lot of people I’ve had a thing with the name of this grape. I’d never tried it until this wine and the name kept playing with my head. I kept imagining that the wine was somehow…sweet and I’ve needed to keep reminding me that it is a dry wine. You would think that after tasting it, it would go away but it is the first thing I think of when I hear the name. I also had a scare with it. As I was reading about it, someone described it as Charbono and Douce Noir. Which, if you see wine #43 on this list, that’s exactly what they call Bonarda in other places. So I kept looking and I was happy to read that UC Davis did a study that defined Dolcetto and Charbono as two different grapes. For a second I thought I had another repeat. I did enjoy the subtle earthiness of the wine.
