Nerd Alert: According to ampelographer Pierre Galet Mourvèdre thrives in warm climates as the variety has a tendency to both bud and ripen very late. Most wine historians agree that Mourvèdre is likely to be Spanish in origin, though its exact history is difficult to pinpoint. The variety was probably introduced to Valencia by the Phoenicians around 500 BC.

Personal Note: I find it extremely humorous that within the notes I included, I mention the Phoenicians. It’s one of those ‘most people won’t get because it’s an inside family joke’ but there’s a very very old joke from a famous cuban comedian Alvarez Guedes that had to do with the Phoenicians. Long story short, it’s about finally getting to what you want to do. I’ve been trying to do this list for a little more than two years now but this year it finally took off. So…’los fenicios’. Back to the grape and wine, I’ve had this wine for the better part of this decade and it has never dissapointed. The brand has other more premium wines but they are not 100% monastrell. That being said, this little gem has been reviewed by the big names and given 92 and 90 points respectively by RP and JS. It’s so different from other spanish wines. But I have yet to try a french mourvedre. That seems like a worthwhile experiment later on. Yet a nother VS tasting.

Curious Synonyms: Mourvedre, Mataro.
