Nerd Alert: Austrian hybrid grape created in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt (1888–1964), who later became Director of the Federal Institute and Experimental Station of Viticulture, Fruit Production and Horticulture (1938–1945). It comprises a crossing between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Because Zweigelt buds later than Saint-Laurent and ripens earlier than Blaufrankisch, it provides a kind of insurance policy in the vineyard. A key indicator of Zweigelt’s success as a crossing is that it has now become parent variety itself, most notably with Cabernet Franc to create Cabernet Moravia, but also with Rathay to create Austria’s little-known Roesler.
Personal Note: The next three grapes are very curious and interesting and I’m very excited about them. All of them are not really in the radar of day to day wine drinkers on this part of the globe and that’s a shame. I purchased them from the same distributor and all tell different stories. This one in particular, is the second or third time I try this grape and it’s hard to describe or compare it. It’s its own thing. I mean it’s not a heavy hitter but it has a well rounded contour, good fruit flavors that remain. I had this for a virtual wine tasting this past Halloween and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to confess though, that I still have trouble saying the name out loud. But that’s a me problem not the grape’s.
