#52 Negroamaro – 448 grapes left

I’m falling for Puglia and it’s wines. This wine was very approachable, hints of vanilla and long on palate.

WINE DETAILS:

  • Grape: Negroamaro
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Wine: Nireus
  • Vintage: 2016
  • Winery: Cantine Ionis
  • Location: Salento IGT, Puglia, Italy
  • Date: 1/5/21
  • Distributor: Panamerican Wines

Curious Synonyms: Abbruzzese, Amaronero, Jonico, Mangiaverme, San Lorenzo, Uva Cane.

Nerd Alert: Grown almost exclusively in Apulia and particularly in Salento, the peninsula which can be visualised as the “heel” of Italy. One of the trio of Puglia’s best known red varieties (together with Primitivo and Nero di Troia). Believed to be a Greek import connected with Hellenic colonisation between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Negroamaro possesses a natural resistance to the principal diseases, as well as a skin rich in polyphenols such as resveratrol and anthocyanins.

Personal Note: The first thought as I started drinking this wine was ‘why is this the first time I try this wine?’. This is just awesome. The nose is elegant, on palate it just explodes. Vanilla and dark fruit overpower my mouth. The wine bold but not tannic. I mean if this is an example of that grape…sign me in as a fan. Something that caught my attention about this wine, not sure if it’s a regional thing or a grape thing, but they leave the grapes in the vines for a whole month after they have matured so they lose water and the sugar and phenolics compounds get concentrated. I’m noticing that I’ve liked two of the 3 Puglia wines I’ve tried (Primitivo being the other). I’m interested in seeing my reaction to Nero di Troia, because all signs point of me liking this area a lot.
