Every time I read this grape’s name I laugh a little on account of it sounding like a spanish word for the flu (catarro).

Nerd Alert: One of Italy’s most commonly planted grape varieties, making up around 60 percent of Sicily’s total vineyard area. Commonly regarded (and widely used) as a lower-quality blending component, or an ingredient in Marsala wines. Catarratto was long thought to be two distinct grape varieties, Catarratto Bianco Comune and Catarratto Bianco Lucido. DNA testing in 2008 suggested that the two are genetically identical and, instead of being separate varieties, they are in fact different clones of the same grape variety.
Personal Note: Every time I read this grape’s name I laugh a little on account of it sounding like a spanish word for the flu (catarro). This was definitely my first time with the grape but now my second sicilian wine and overall my 14th grape from Italy so far. I remember my thoughts on wine #11, the first italian in the list, and now 14 out of 68, we are talking 20% of my list is italian. My guess is…it will grow even more. I started taking notes while tasting this wine and I hate saying this but I find myself wondering if the label didn’t direct my thoughts. As you can see the label is green with some yellow and my mind went to zesty lime and lemon almost imediately after opening. And those aromas and flavors are there but I don’t know why my mind flew to the label right away. Funny note, I always enjoy going into a place like Wine Searcher and looking up a wine that was difficult for me to acquire and seeing them write “this wine is hard to find” and all I can think of in jest is “Really Sherlock? You don’t say?” This wine also came in a suitcase to be part of this taste experiment.
