Nerd Alert: The vine likes hot and relatively dry climates. For most of the 20th Century, Nero d’Avola was used as a blending grape and the name very rarely appeared on wine labels. Depending on production methods, Nero d’Avola can be made into a dense and dark wine that is stored in oak barrels and suitable for aging, or young and fresh wines. The region of Calabria can lay claim to the variety via its synonym Calabrese (meaning “of Calabria”), though this term may be a derivation of Calaurisi, an ancient name for someone from Avola.
Personal Note: I swear this has been pure happenstance. I did not plan to have 3 sicilian wines in this milestone, much less so close to each other. But sometimes, you just have to run with things as they land. From my readings 2014 was a good year for Sicilian wines and this one in particular was a damn good one. From the moment I opened the bottle, the plum aromas hit me. The tannins were tamed and the dark fruit kept on coming. It’s one of those wines that even though it’s dry it can confuse people because of the presence of the fruit. The one actor that took on a minor role in this movie was the acidity. And as I left it in the glass, the aromas just kept getting better. I’m actually thinking of going out and buying a few more bottles of this wine and it’s price was so ridiculously low. This now makes it the second italian red wine on this milestone that makes me want to buy more of it (first being #52, Negroamaro), and the third all together on the list if I include #20, Primitivo). I mean, I knew Italy would make an impression on me but wow. On a funny note, this wine had one of those rubber corks which was pretty tight in there. It even got stuck on my corkscrew. I literally needed pliers to take the thing off. Now I’m left wondering…did it evolve in bottle with a rubber cork?
