I’ve been waiting to open this bottle for about two years with no expectations of it blowing my mind but the odds of me trying/finding this grape.

Nerd Alert: Grk is the Croatian word for a Greek. It grows exclusively on the sandy soils near Lumbarda. Confirmed to be indigenous to Croatia and a close relative to Crljenak Kaštelanski (aka Primitivo). Often called “the most feminine of all the grapes”. Almost never gives a high yield and with less than 50 hectares, some fear that each vintage of Grk might just be the last.

Personal Note: Finally #75. I’ve been waiting to open this bottle for about two years with no expectations of it blowing my mind but the odds of me trying/finding this grape in the near future is very limited due to production. The story of me getting this wine includes a friend traveling to Croatia a few years back bringing me something regional. The bottle itself is a beauty. I opened it with my family this weekend and spent a good minute or two looking at the wine in glass. It had a lot of micro bubbles in the bottom. Then it got…interesting. I got the whole house smelling that wine and not one person had the same opinion. My wife got honey dipped strawberries, others said fruits but could not identify a single one. My old man stayed quiet as he couldn’t identify a single known characteristic (and it did had an aroma). Me? I was transported to the surroundings of a hot dog cart and it’s combined savory aromas, almost like relish but not quite. Yes. I know what I just wrote. No, it did not smell like hot dogs. It was different. From reading online I read it should have aromas of pine and saltiness…maybe I’m not that far off? Meanwhile it was rich on palate, nice golden color, quite alcoholic and short lived on finish. Now even with everything I wrote, I enjoyed this experience fully. This is what this list is about. Finding new things, new grapes, and sharing an experience that hopefully creates curiosity among those reading.
