Nerd Alert: Dark-skinned wine grape originally from Jura, northeastern France, but which has made its way over the centuries to vineyards in northwestern Spain and various parts of Portugal. They typically have a deep cherry-red color and flavors redolent of dark red berries and other forest fruits. They also tend to be powerfully alcoholic, thanks to their prolific natural sugars.

Personal Note: As Willie Nelson says: ‘On the road again’. Not long ago, the distributor announced he was bringing some new things and among them, this 100% Trousseau. Of course I jumped at it as soon as I heard it. Didn’t even check to see if it was a repeat grape with a different name. It was a gamble of sorts but since I’ve decided I’m going to be writing and sharing on this page about other things aside the 500 grapes list, It made even more sense.

A fun fact about this wine is that it’s from the ‘North Coast’ (a pretty vague AVA since it encompasses 6 counties including Napa and Sonoma). But from my reading, depending on the vintage, grapes are sourced from different vineyards so I guess it makes sense.

I know I say that a lot, on account of never having actually tasted some of these grapes but…unexpected. Let’s talk color. At first it looked a bit cloudy. Like an old wine with sediment that just arrived by plane. But it wasn’t that. The color was almost pomegranate. That alone I found interesting. The nose was intense, it was red fruit marmalade, it was elegant. And on palate: ‘dear asteroid belt surrounding us’ what was this? The first sip, for a second I thought it had some petillant. The acidity was tamed, the fruit in harmony, it had a candyesque feel to it and very easily could be called a moderate climate Pinot Noir in a blind taste. This grape is an amazing way to start the second 100 grapes.
