Nerd Alert: Teroldego is an ancient grape variety, and has been cultivated in Italy for hundreds of years. It is soft and needs very little aging, usually being drunk within three years of bottling, though it can cellar well for up to 10 years. DNA testing has revealed that Teroldego is a parent of Lagrein, and a sibling of Dureza, a parent of Syrah. The wine Teroldego Rotaliano, which is made with this grape in Trentino, has had DOC status since 18 February 1971.
Personal Note: I have been looking forward to this grape for quite a while. Yes, I’m an equal opportunity grape enjoyer, but there’s something about drinking a grape that’s considered ancient. A grape whose dna has lived a lot longer than us. I mean, this is one of the parents of Syrah, a well known and consumed grape across the world. It’s like, being friends with Ben Stiller without knowing his last name and then one day have him go “Oh, by the way, did you know my dad, Jerry?” Serenity Now! Seinfeld joke. Look it up. Anyway…So when I heard a local distributor brought some…I had to have it. Now just by looking at the alcohol I knew this wasn’t going to be a powerful wine. Somewhere online I read that it was possibly related to Pinot Noir, I say it resembles it a bit on palate. It was elegant, not overpowering, fruit present and you can definitely tell it’s not a warm climate wine because it wasn’t very tannic. It definitely doesn’t need a lot of aging, this was three years and was ready to drink. I don’t know, and that could just be me, how this wine could last ten years though. Maybe those of you that have tried it, even older vintages can share feedback and help us understand more. One things for sure, I’m very happy I got the chance to try this.
