Nerd Alert: Made it’s first appearance near the 14th Century. The Marche region has two DOC titles for this grape: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. A DNA test matches the grape to Peverella, an old grape variety from Trentino which is also grown in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul region. It’s grapevine is very susceptible to clonal mutations with several sub-varieties of the grape known to exist in central Italy under various synonyms. It’s commonly lauded by critics as being one of Italy’s best white wine grape varieties.

Personal Note: I once read an article about the 3 V’s of italian white wines. This of course being one of them. I’m planning on visiting all three in this milestone. I found very interesting in my research how in the 1950’s, the bottles of Verdicchio wine were in the shape of anforas and were green in color and designed by Fazi Battaglia (renowned producer of the area). This particular wine I opened last friday when one of my good friends came to visit. First time since this whole Covid thing started. Nothing makes you feel older than talking to old friends about old times, which obviously…where the best. I guess memories age like good wine.

So first time trying this varietal and I was very much pleased with it. On palate I got citrus notes like grapefruit but I also got a subtle flavor of something else that I couldn’t identify. So I did the obvious thing. I read what others wrote. Some of the aromas described I didn’t get but after reading WE I learned that it was ginger that other thing I perceived. Also, WE gave it a 91 and wrote it has a 5 year shell life which I found interesting. Aging potential, if ever so shortly is something I enjoy in wines. The acidity was marvelous and I honestly enjoyed this wine thoroughly. Highly recommended varietal.
