#100 Humagne Rouge – 400 grapes left

Light-medium bodied, definitely dry, not very tannic. The best I can give you guys is a similar vibe to a Cru Beajoulais.

Nerd Alert: Red wine grape variety originally from the Aosta Valley, but which is now found mainly in the Valais region of Switzerland. Otherwise known as “Cornalin d’Aoste”. It has pronounced tannins and often very rustic and earthy when produced in a more savory style.

Personal Note: This grape! I have a story to share with you all about Humagne Rouge. Roughly a year before the pandemic, I bought a book I’ve mentioned before. God Forsaken Grapes by Jason Wilson. I credit it with helping me start out on this journey of trying new grapes. And within its first chapters, the author talks about his trip to Switzerland and mentions a few grapes, difficult to find because of quantity limitations. This one got stuck in my head. I kept reading about how difficult it is to find. So imagine my surprise when earlier this year on a wine run to a local distributor I find this wine made with 100% of the varietal. Right there and then I knew I would end this first 100 milestone with it.

This grape is from Valais, Switzerland. And there has been talk about it being the same as Petit Rouge but it isn’t certain. If you search online you’ll find both opinions taking sides but enzyme and genetic testing in 1999 identified them as different. So I”m going to go with that assessment.

So let’s talk about the wine. I tasted it for a while looking for a comparison because at the end of the day, with each new grape, we need a point of comparison. It was light-medium bodied, definitely dry, not very tannic. The best I can give you guys is a similar vibe to a Cru Beajoulais or an old cellared spatsburgunder. It was definitely an european vibe because of the earthy tones in it. There was definitely red fruit present, lot of cherry. Pretty decent finish. A good wine, from an interesting grape.

And that makes 100. Soon my milestone review.
