Nerd Alert: The German name Gewürztraminer literally means “Spice Traminer” or “Perfumed Traminer”, and originally comes from the Alsace region in France. This grape variety is a mutation of the Savagnin blanc, also named Traminer in South Tyrol (northern Italy). The best examples of Gewurztraminer are generally regarded as being from the grand cru vineyards of Alsace. The three countries with the largest percentage of growth of this grape are France with 43%, Italy with 21% and the United States with 14%. But I tell you…do not discard the American Gewurztraminer. They are really good.

Personal Note: If there is such a thing as love at first taste, then I’m here to testify my love for this grape. Since the first time I tried it, there has been little competition in my heart (and taste buds). And it’s a funny thing when you meet someone that feels the same way about it. It’s even better if you are married to them. Now, this wine was something else because it was from Spain and I didn’t even knew they grew Gewurztraminer. I must say…it held it’s own. Memorable and everything.
