Nerd Alert: Discovered in a Tempranillo vineyard in the Rioja region by a wine grower in the late 20th century. In 2007, the Consejo Regulador of Rioja officially sanctioned the use of Tempranillo blanco in the DOC wines of Rioja. Tempranillo Blanco shares 97.8 percent of its DNA with its red parent variety, though the resulting wines would bear little resemblance were they placed side by side. As a new variety, growers and winemakers are still learning about Tempranillo blanco and the types of wines it can produce. Its leaves, bunches and berries are smaller than Tempranillo’s, though their life-cycles are very similar.
Personal Note: Before this year I had never tried Tempranillo Blanco. So far I’ve tried three different wines and this one left the best impression. The quality of the grapes must have been top notch because it had all of the attributes I look for in a wine. I know some people are inclined to say there are a lot of similarities with it’s red genetical twin, but aside from some structure it doesn’t really. The same thing happened to me with the white malbec. Must be the lack of tannins. Once again, as many wines on the list this year, I tried it on a virtual tasting and we had the privilege of having the winemaker Pablo Tascón with us for a really nice conversation.
