Nerd Alert: Also known, or better known as Zinfandel. The variety is grown in over 10 percent of California vineyards. DNA analysis has revealed that it is genetically equivalent to the Croatian grapes Crljenak Kaštelanski and Tribidrag, as well as to the Primitivo variety traditionally grown in Apulia (the “heel” of Italy), where it was introduced in the 18th century. (You see why my rule about names?) In 1993, UCD professor Carole Meredith used a DNA fingerprinting technique to confirm that Primitivo and Zinfandel are clones of the same variety.

Personal Note: Full disclosure, I bought this wine for this list. I had zero expectations from it. It is an inexpensive wine. The distributor is a good friend with impecable taste, but I mean, you need to have realistic expectations. Why? So that when you try a wine like this one you are blown away by how a simple wine can be so good. I ordered some more afterwards. It was just so balanced and well basically that thing which you want to experience while drinking. I believe people call it drinkability. I debated if trying a California Zinfandel vs an italian Primitivo, but it is the version I least drink so I just went with it.
