Nerd Alert: White Italian wine grape variety of Greek origins. The grape’s thick skin provides good resistance to downy mildew which can attack the grape late in the harvest season. This allows them to be harvested late with high sugar levels. This works well in the production of dessert wines. Grechetto refers to two distinct grape varieties, Grechetto di Orvieto and Grechetto di Todi. Both are grown extensively in Umbria, and in Emilia-Romagna. The two are often confused, and both are often described to by growers, winemakers and retailers simply as Grechetto. They are also frequently blended together. The confusion extends production regulations. In various Umbrian DOCs, including Orvieto, documents refer only to Grechetto.
Personal Note: I’ve had this wine in particular quite often. It was the subterranean almost nerd wine for those seeking a white wine from Italy with a good trifecta (smell, taste, finish) when going to restaurants and it was in an italian restaurant here in Puerto Rico the first time I tried it. This grape is pretty fantastic. There is something about it’s high level of acidity and the floral notes that just hits me with it’s best shot. Upon study I did find it curious how the two varieties are intertwined and nobody bothers to detail it in the bottle. At least not in the wines I’ve tried. But seems like something worth studying some more.
