Nerd Alert: In 1870, the ampelographers P.P. DeMaria and Carlo Leardi noted that the Cortese was being widely cultivated in the Alessandria province of Piedmont where it was prized for its hardiness to grape diseases and ability to produce large crop yields as well as it high quality wine. Cortese di Gavi, or simply Gavi, is an Italian dry white wine produced in a restricted area of the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont, close to the Ligurian border. The wine was awarded DOC status in 1974 and elevated to DOCG in 1998.The name derives from Gavi, the comune at the centre of its production zone.

Personal Note: This is one of the wines I was saving for my less traveled white wine grapes from Italy tasting for this past march. I had over twelve different varietals and the tasting ready to go but…covid happens. So after waiting a while and realizing, this in person kind of tasting I so miss won’t be happening for a while, I decided to start drinking them slowly and using them for this list. This grape in particular I found to be a little stoic. It was elegant but without any fanfare. I’m going to ahead and use the following comparison, realizing that 1) they don’t taste the same and 2) some experts my frown upon it, but it reminded me a bit to some Gruners in that they seem kind of regal. And by that I mean is like they want to have fun, but they are not allowed to. So they stay there, smiling, being awesome, but unable to display it. Reserved, non opus wine, but enjoyable. That’s the bottomline. On another note, one of my favorite synonyms for this grape is Bianca Fernanda, which sounds like the name of the evil stepmother in a mexican telenovela.
